There is so much mileage in them for helping our learners to not only improve their reading or listening skills but also to notice and explore grammar, vocabulary, discourse features, etc. They can also provide fabulous stimulation for speaking, writing, critical thinking and creativity. So why are listening and reading texts in coursebooks so often followed by comprehension questions? We are going to look at why comprehension questions might not always be the most useful activities and then explore some alternatives we can use that could be much more valuable to our learners, not to mention way more engaging.
